Black History Month

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham Campus invites the community to partake in a series of events celebrating Black History Month. Events are organized by students and faculty and are open and free to the public.

Friday, Feb. 1, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and FDU’s Black History Month Committee present the first collegiate inaugural ball at 6 p.m. in Lenfell Hall. Speakers from campus and the NAACP Morristown Chapter will be in attendance, and there will be food and drink served.

Tuesday, Feb. 5, the event “Mental Health Symposium: Multiculturalism and Mental Health” will run from 12:45-2 p.m. in Lenfell Hall. Panelists include graduate students from the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Department and professors from the Department of Psychology. Shortly after, a “Politics on the PublicMind” lecture will include a presentation from Michael Rockland titled, “A Day with Dr. King,” from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Orangerie. Rockland is a professor of American Studies at Rutgers University. To register for this event please contact publicmindga@gmail.com.

Wednesday, Feb. 6, Senator Nia Gill of New Jersey’s 34 District will give a presentation from 2-4 p.m. in the Orangerie.

Monday, Feb. 11, Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver will give a presentation at 2 p.m. in Lenfell Hall.

Tuesday, Feb. 12, a “Hot Topics” discussion titled, “Are We Post Racial?” will include faculty and student panelists, and will be held at 7 p.m. in Lenfell Hall.

Wednesday, Feb. 13, a performance and discussion on Hip Hop will include a presentation titled, “Hip Hop around the World featuring Negros Americanos,” from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Twombly Lounge.

Thursday, Feb. 14, Ras Baraka, poet and politician, will speak from 5-7 p.m. in Lenfell Hall.

Monday, Feb. 18, Jay Jennings, author of “Carry the Rock: Race, Football and the Soul of an American City” will speak from 5-7 p.m. in Hartman Lounge.

Thursday, Feb. 21, a poetry reading by poet Kamilah Moon at 2-3:30 p.m. will be proceeded by students sharing their original work and literature for “Student Open Mic” in the Pub where food and drink will be served.

Wednesday, Feb. 27, the event titled, “Reginald Gaines Poetry Workshop and Reading,” is from 2-5 p.m. in Room 13 of the Mansion. To register for this event contact Professor Katie Singer at ksinger@fdu.edu.

Thursday, Feb. 28, will include a book publication party and reading with Randall Westbrook, author and FDU professor who wrote the book, “Education and Empowerment: The Essential Writings of W.E.B. DuBois,” featuring works of W.E.B. DuBois from 4-5 p.m. in Hartman Lounge.
