Avaltroni Named Dean of School of Pharmacy

Michael J. Avaltroni, a distinguished teacher and scholar with diverse and extensive experience in higher education and more than 10 years of dedicated service at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been named Dean of FDU’s School of Pharmacy.

“Following a national search, I am pleased to appoint Michael Avaltroni as Dean of FDU’s School of Pharmacy,” said Christopher Capuano, FDU’s University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We are confident that the School of Pharmacy will continue to grow under Michael’s leadership.”

Avaltroni’s history with FDU dates back to his undergraduate years when he was a chemistry major at the College at Florham, earning his B.S. in 1999. He then received both his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. He returned to FDU as an assistant professor of chemistry in the Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences in 2003.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead a committed team of faculty, staff and students as we pursue new challenges and opportunities within pharmacy education and beyond,” said Avaltroni.

Since joining FDU, he has helped bring more than $1 million in grant money to the University for such projects as the Institute for the Enhancement of Teaching Science and Math, the BASF Summer High School Academy, the Summer Science Camp Partnership with the Morristown Science Academy, and support for a variety of projects from such corporations as Merck, Schering Plough, and Pfizer.  He was named “Teacher of the Year” by the Student Government Association in 2008 and received special recognition in the form of a Presidential Citation from Dr. J. Michael Adams in 2009 for his work in developing the School of Pharmacy.

Avaltroni played an instrumental role in the process to create the School of Pharmacy. For three years, he served as associate dean for academic affairs for the School, and during the past year as interim dean. In these capacities, he has seen the School accept its first class, has worked to put together a first-rate team of faculty and staff, is building strong relationships with the pharmaceutical and pharmacy communities, and is moving the School forward as it seeks candidate status with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
