Endowments ensure quality and provide fiscal stability to the nation’s colleges and universities. They provide a dependable source of income, giving the institution the freedom to plan the future with confidence, seize new opportunities and meet emerging needs as they arise. A university’s endowment provides continuous support for student assistance, faculty retention and recruitment, and essential maintenance of our campuses.
A named endowment is created through the establishment of a permanent fund, professionally invested and managed. The fund is invested with a portion of the earned-income distributed at a rate (currently 5%) determined by the Board of Trustees. The donor can be certain that his or her gift will continue to support its intended purpose in perpetuity.
Endowment for Faculty Enhancement
A great faculty is a university’s channel to academic excellence of the highest echelon. As the leader in global education, Fairleigh Dickinson University must have the necessary means to attract and retain the best scholars and researchers, both nationally and internationally. With increased competition from business, government and other institutions of higher education, that goal becomes more challenging with each passing year.
The creation of an Endowed Distinguished Chair signals Fairleigh Dickinson’s commitment to a global vision, as well as to academic excellence in its programs of greatest accomplishment and potential. Invigorating the University’s academic activities in such areas as scholarly research and publications enables the University to attract leading talent and retain those professors whose achievements have caught the attention of other universities.
An Endowed Chair allows the University to recognize and reward outstanding scholarship among the ranks of its current faculty and recruit nationally and internationally recognized scholars from outside the University. In addition to guaranteeing salaries commensurate with experience and potential, endowed chairs provide resources that enable faculty to build programs that make a real difference for both FDU and the world community.
An Endowed Professorship allows the University to attract outstanding scholars, experts and professionals to campus for temporary appointments of at least one academic year. These scholars encourage intellectual growth, introduce new ideas and share scholarly research in programs of proven performance, as well as innovative initiatives with great promise for the future.
Endowed Scholarships
Fairleigh Dickinson University has always believed that no student should be denied access to its programs solely on the basis of financial need. New endowed scholarships will enable the University to give promising students the financial and personal support needed to transcend economic inequality through education.
New scholarships enable the University to expand need and merit based awards for the best and brightest students without tapping into operating funds or relying solely on tuition increases.
If Fairleigh Dickinson wants to continue to enhance the quality of its students, it must provide competitive scholarship support for outstanding student-scholars. Endowment funding is essential to support need-based and academic merit scholarships, as well as to build the University’s outreach efforts to international students and to confirm the University’s commitment to diversity.
Restricted Programmatic Endowment
Endowments such as these are discretionary in nature and provide the margin of excellence for a specific program. These funds allow for the overall enhancement of a particular program and benefit student learning and faculty instruction. Programmatic endowment needs include technology, research, library acquisitions, and, closest to the mission and vision of the University, global education and research.
