    Vanessa's Story


    The gift of dreams, plans and
    expectations for the future

    When I came to FDU I was very shy and could barely speak English. And I didn’t have the means to pursue a college degree. Higher education was not a viable choice for me.

    Then came two opportunities that made all the difference: the Margareth Bellevan and Alexander Potupa Scholarships. These scholarships were a great relief to me. They allowed me to go to FDU and complete my education.

    From my first day on campus, I was welcomed by a caring and attentive community. I met students from all backgrounds, professors who are compassionate and motivating instructors and staff who are always willing to help.

    I am originally from the Ivory Coast, a small country in West Africa. When my country faced a violent civil war in 2011, my finance professor asked me if my parents were alright. He said, “What’s happening in your home country is horrible. Let me know if you need anything. I know it’s got to be difficult for you to follow in class, so tell me if you need any help.” I was deeply touched.

    I am proud to tell you that I graduated in May 2012 with a degree in finance, and I am now enrolled in the MBA program. Like they say, once you go to FDU you never leave!

    Because of those scholarships and this University, I have dreams, plans and expectations for the future. I want to give back the same opportunities I received by becoming a college professor, as well as helping women in third-world countries through microfinance initiatives.

    FDU helped me to blossom into a confident woman who wants to make a difference in the lives of others.
